MUNICIPAL SERVICES — FIRE DEPARTMENT & PREVENTION

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Fire départment

Le main role of your fire department is to prevent and educate the public to the dangers of fires, by prevention. The municipality can count on 21 firefighters broken down as follows: a Director (fire chief), a deputy-chief, a captain, 2 lieutenants and 16 firefighters which are all part-time in other words on call when a situation arises. Your fire department has approximately 45 calls per year ranging from building fires, chimney fires, forest fires, brush fires, false alarms, car accidents and water rescues. The department also receives numerous calls for security purposes and public security and other services required by the municipality.

The resources

The municipality has 5 vehicles for interventions:

  • A 1982 pumper with 840 GPM pump and a 750 gallon reservoir, equipped with     2 Breathing apparatus for the first attack team;

  • A 2004 pumper/tanker with a 1050 GPM pump and a 1500 gallon reservoir with an extra 500 GPM stand alone pump to fill the tanker and 2 breathing apparatus;

  • A 1996 command post to transport the men and equipment such as pumps, generators, breathing apparatus, fire suits and manual tools. This vehicle also has an incorporated generator to light up the night scenes;

  • A 1985 mini-van that hold the Jaws of Life and can carry up to 5 firefighters and tools for automobile accidents and extraction;

  • A 14.5 foot aluminum rescue craft with a 7.5hp motor for search and rescues on our lakes and rivers.

Training

To be a firefighter, everyone must follow 275 hours of training, divided in 3 sessions (18 months).  Following that, other specialty training is required like the Jaws of Life, pumper training, Water rescue and more and are mandatory by law to work on a scene. For a firefighter to become an officer they must add 175 hours of additional training

Prevention

Your fire department organizes different activities of prevention during the whole year. The department visits schools, daycare centers and old aged homes.  The department publishes monthly public messages in local papers, the municipal bulletin. We have annual open doors to the fire hall, to inform you on the dangers and what preventative actions to prevent fires and personal harm.
